Pantheon - 21 March 2012

First outing for one of David's new games - Pantheon.  This is a civilization-type game with added gods.  But unlike other civ games where each player is a different empire, in this game there is a random empire each turn which becomes the starting point on the map for all players.  The players don't fight but compete to acquire gods, make sacrifices, collect tiles and build columns on the map - these last into subsequent epochs giving players alternative starting points.

Points are gained through acquiring major and minor gods, building lots of columns plus certain end-game bonuses.  The game allowed for a variety of strategies and was a close run thing, with a final bonus allowing James to leapfrog Andy and David right at the end.  Final scores James 64, Andy 60, David 59 and Kieron 54.

A fun and clever game.  The night was also notable for Andy coming out to greet us and then the dog shutting the door on him, locking him out.  Options included driving back to Cheltenham, or visiting the Bear at Rodborough but fortunately Andy managed to break back in.

Great game. Well worth another outing when we have 4 players.

I went back through the rules today to see if I'd missed anything during the rather rushed rules reading and there were a few mistakes.

The most important was that you always have to trace a route back to the civ's start temple. So you can't start out of a column, although you can incorporate your existing columns into a new network.

During someone's move phase. Any player who chooses not to do a move takes a card. (I remember reading this out but we forgot it immediately!)

It also looks like sufficient minor gods are brought out to match the icons on the god cards and booty tokens. Then if you claim a minor god through any of these methods you take the best available. It also looks like you don't clear them away at the end of an epoch.

Impact of these changes... Well the first is most significant, as James, Andy and I all took advantage of having columns near booty to get a jump start.

So Kieron's approach may well have been more productive, although to be fair the rest of us would probably have modified our strategy as a result

I really enjoyed the game and want to play it again soon. Shame I won't be around for games for weeks now ;-(
It was interesting to see that all the rules tweaks would have helped my strategy! The column rule makes a HUGE difference and would I guess extend the game.
