Phalanxx - 5 July 2018

Another outing for a more recent game from Bernd Eisenstein (of Peloponnes fame).  A good mixture of dice placement, map expansion and conflict, and card collection.  James pipped David to first place at the last stage of end game scoring.  Final scores: James 63, David 60, Andy 35.

Phalanxx - 8 June 2017

Another play of this interesting game.  Andy was building up his army strength to play a particular card but unfortunately (or fortunately for us) there wasn't enough game time for him to attack - which is necessary for the end game bonuses.  So David and James pulled away in the final scoring, with David just inching ahead.

Final scores: David 60, James 57, Andy 37.

Phalanxx - 1 February 2017

Second play of Phalanxx.  The game started with a pre-emptive strike on James by Stuart, which dented James' growth plans for a while.  In the fight for the cities in the centre of the map, James took the safer option of attacking David's city in order to avoid further Wrath of Stu, but inadvertently stalled David's game as he was holding a couple of cards that required that second city in order to play them.  Andy jumped in the fight in the last round taking one of James' cities away.  In the final reckoning Stuart took the top place.

Final scores: Stuart 52, James 50, Andy 46 and David 34.

Phalanxx - 18 January 2017

First play of one of James' Christmas presents: Phalanxx, the new game from Bernd Eisenstein (of Peloponnes fame).  The game pits the players against each other as the successors to Alexander.  Starting with a city and an oasis each, players collect cards featuring different types of soldiers, leaders and equipment, and explore and attack new areas.

Taking actions is controlled by a cunning dice mechanism.  Players have three home dice and in their turn, roll the three "travelling dice", and carry out different actions depending on how those dice compare.  The dice come in three different colours and playing particular cards might require a player to have two of the same colour for example, so the dice get changed, including stealing from other players.

Quite a lot to think about in the first game but it was a lot of fun, and very close.  In the final scoring, extra points are scored for all sorts of things, including the sets of infantry/archers/cavalry you've collected, and only then the players scores started to spread out,

Final scores: James 55, David 54, Stuart 48 and Andy 42.
